DÄ internationalArchive21/2010Heroic Self Experiment
LNSLNS Perhaps it is of interests that the doyen of German mycology, Professor Dr Hans-Heinrich Rieth (19141994), showed as early as in the 1950s to 1960s in a heroic self experiment that Candida albicans solution, if imbibed by a healthy subject, is entirely innocuous. However, the scenario is different in patients who have intestinal damage or who are immunosuppressed; in such patients the so called thrush-sepsis cycle (1) may affect the mucosa saprogenically as well as hematogenically. This has been shown for generalized Candida mycosis in panmyelophthisis (2).
